Pet medical insurance does not provide coverage for routine care such as spaying and neutering, teeth cleaning, flea and tick protection and vaccines.

Elective procedures

Elective procedures like tail-docking, ear-cropping and declawing are ineligible for coverage unless deemed medically necessary by your vet.

Cross

Liability coverage

In the unfortunate event that your pet causes damage to a person or property, this incident would not be covered by pet health insurance.

I've had Petplan for several years now, and it has really paid for itself with my diabetic Labrador Retriever. Just a couple of weeks ago, she got sick with pancreatitis and was hospitalized for over a week. The bills were over $5,000...Petplan was very understanding and considerate during this difficult time and took care of everything easily.

Molly

My Beagle mix Molly had torn both ligaments in her back legs and had to get two TPLO surgeries. So thankful for Petplan—because with the therapy, plus the surgeries, it would have cost over $12,000! I only have to pay $4,000 out of my own pocket, after all is said and done. Petplan is a true lifesaver!

Dexter

We've had Petplan insurance on my dogs since they were young pups. This year, my 11-year-old Husky had cataract surgery, costing almost $4,000. I wasn't sure if his insurance would pay off after all these years, but today I received a check from Petplan covering nearly the entire cost! I would recommend Petplan to anyone.

PET INSURANCE 101

Wait, what even is pet insurance?

We're so glad you asked. Pet Insurance can be a complex, confusing thing. But it doesn't have to be. Let's unpack all the jargon, red tape and nonsense you've seen out there.

Pet Insurance makes vet bills more affordable

That's the simplest way to put it. If your pet is sick or hurt, pet insurance reimburses you for the cost of treatment. At petplan, that means paying back for up to 90% of your vet bill. We like to think about it like taking care of the people who take care of their pets.

Petplan's insurance-speak translator

It cam feel like insurance providers are speaking their own language.
Not sure how to make sense of it all? We've got you.

Pre-existing condition:

A pre-existing condition is an illness or injury that is diagnosed before your pet's insurance policy is in effect. No pet insurance companies cover this. Learn more >

Waiting period:

A waiting period is the amount of time that a new policyholder needs to wait before filing their first claim. It’s a safeguard against people insuring pets who are already sick or hurt. Some providers have waiting periods up to 30 days. At Petplan, the waiting period is 15 days. Learn more >

Reimbursement rate:

Your reimbursement rate is the percentage that you get paid back for each covered vet visit. At Petplan, you can choose either 70%, 80%, or 90%. Learn more >

Premium:

A premium is the amount you pay for your pet’s insurance policy. At Petplan, you can choose to pay monthly, quarterly or annually.

Deductible:

A deductible is the amount you need to pay out of pocket before your pet insurance kicks in.

Claim:

A claim is a request to be paid back for a covered vet visit or treatment. How to file a claim >

Rider:

A rider is an add-on to your standard policy. For instance, some providers don’t include comprehensive dental in their base plan. It’s something you have to add as a rider and pay extra for. At Petplan, we cover all adult teeth in every plan.

Policy:

Policy: Your policy is the document that tells you exactly what is and isn’t covered by your insurance plan. See an example policy >

Annual limit:

Your annual limit is the maximum amount of money you can be paid back every policy year. It’s a number that you pick based on your needs.

Invoice:

An invoice is the bill or receipt you receive from your vet after a visit. In order to file a claim, you need proof of a paid invoice. It should also be itemized, meaning it details exactly what you were charged for. Learn more >

Medical record:

A medical record is a report from your vet that details your pet’s medical history. This includes exam notes, lab results and any medical information.  Learn more >

Co-insurance:
