“Dr. Judy McBeth wanted to be a vet from the time she was 9 years old. Now the owner of her own practice, Fox Ridge Veterinary Clinic, she is a strong and consistent advocate for homeless pets. She provides time and energy to her local animal shelter, publicizes animal safety tips, strongly encourages rescue/adoption, and models excellent care and love with her own pets. She is passionate about her profession and about the animals she treats, and it's obvious that she cares about the people who bring the animals to her. It is not easy to maintain a solo practice in this economic environment, and Dr. McBeth practices her profession with ethics, integrity, passion and joy.” – Lynda W., Pepperell, MA
“Amanda at Cross Street Veterinary Clinic has a genuine love of animals and shows she cares about each one of my pets that I take to Dr. Heer's office. She has shown me how to give fluids to my CKD cat, spent much time discussing laxative treatments (which she is an expert on!), and is very observant. Amanda was the first one to notice my cat, Kes, had slight tremors. Amanda takes care of Kes while I'm out of town. She follows instructions exactly and keeps in constant contact with me to let me know Kes is doing well. While taking care of Kes, Amanda comes into the clinic three times a day, takes the time to hand-feed, plays with Kes, and gives her fluids and medications. I wouldn't trust this to anyone else! Kes really loves her and this cat doesn't take to just anyone. Amanda is an amazing vet tech. She is always cheerful, compassionate and efficient. She deserves to be recognized.” – Nancy O., Porterville, CA
“Queenie had surgery done by another vet at a different animal hospital in August. Her surgery was horribly botched, causing a seriously fractured femur, dislocated hip and shortened right hind leg. She was crippled. Dr. Cabell at Metropolitan Veterinary Associates reconstructed Queenie’s leg by removing the mangled hardware in her rear leg and corrected her fracture by placing a bar with screws anchored through bone and giving her two live bone transplants. Dr. Cabell operated the day before Thanksgiving, even taking Queenie back into X-ray to locate and remove migrated pins. Now Queenie can walk. Dr. Cabell is the very best surgeon; she is also compassionate, honest, caring, dedicated to the animal’s welfare, hardworking and has the highest level of integrity. The list could go on and on. If not for Dr. Cabell’s heroic efforts in the operating room, my dog Queenie would not be here with me today. Dr. Cabell gave Queenie her life back and gave me my dog back.” – Sharon M., Havertown, PA
“Dr. Becker at Oakland Veterinary Referral Services is extremely kind and committed to saving the lives of animals. He worked relentlessly to save my cat, Napoleon, who had a serious liver condition. Even after three weeks of hospitalization and surgery, Napoleon needed a feeding tube and constant care. Dr. Becker worked after hours, came in on Sundays, and even gave me his personal cell phone number so that I could contact him quickly if I needed to. Also, Dr. Becker did everything that he could do assist financially, by waiving his doctor exam fees and also by applying for grants to help cover the enormous expense of the hospitalization and surgery. Dr. Becker gave us another year with Napoleon, that we would have never had without him. When Napoleon finally did pass away, he took time out of his schedule to meet with my family for an hour and talk us through the grief, and advocated for us when we had to appeal a problem with our insurance claim. Dr. Becker certainly deserves the title of Veterinarian of the Year.” – Erin R., Garland TX
“Dr. Meacham of Pines West Animal Hospital has cared for our many dogs and cats for more than 15 years. She rescues, rehabs and always ensures excellent care, including calling us when she's off or away to adjust meds, etc. She and her staff are the kindest, most compassionate caregivers we've ever known. Her pro bono work and service to the community through animal rescue and rehab is amazing, and many of her staff foster and rescue as well – in fact, providing permanent loving homes to strays and abused animals. I can think of no veterinary professional more deserving of Vet of the Year than Lori Meacham. As a medical professional, it's always gratifying to see skill, compassion and care provided to those who are most vulnerable, and Dr. Meacham is the best!!” – Elizabeth D., Pompano Beach, FL
“I have found Dr. Waskow at Mile High Veterinary Hospital to be a refreshing change to my experience of vets. He is honest, up front and tries to help you save some money. If he feels a test really isn't needed, he won't suggest it. He is also the one who recommended Petplan to me, and I am grateful for that. Another reason to nominate Dr. Waskow, besides his absolute love of his job, is his excitement over his new facility. He recently opened a new location and it is stocked with green technology. His enthusiasm shows with this as he welcomes anyone to a tour of the building. It has solar tubes, thermal heating/cooling, natural lighting, etc. He has separate rooms for cats/dogs – for treatment and sleeping. He has a special room for large dogs as well as a room with a separate entrance for animals with contagious diseases. It is a beautiful facility.” – Colleen B., Aurora, CO
“Dr. Karen Hoffmann of Olney Sandy Spring Vet Hospital has taken care of my pets for many years. She excels in all the areas you would hope for your vet to excel. Her practice is well run with state-of-the-art equipment, well-maintained facilities, easy to make appointments, and well-trained, friendly staff. I am always impressed by the depth and extent of Dr. H’s medical knowledge – both standard and alternative. She is empathetic with clients, and I have relied on her wise advice at many critical junctures in my pets’ lives. Her special care of the animals is exemplified in the way she rearranges appointments to minimize stress on the animals, her availability (by cell phone if necessary) in critical moments, and her consulting with specialists as needed so that my pets get the best care possible. Of the many general veterinary practices I have encountered in my life as a pet parent, Dr. Hoffmann’s practice is by far the most professional. I highly recommend Dr. Hoffmann for vet of the year!” – Robin C., Ashton, MD
“Dr. May is the owner of Pearland Pet Health Center and was the vet for my dog, Mollie, when she was diagnosed with bladder cancer a couple of years ago. He was so understanding and caring during Mollie’s illness and was on 24-hour call, giving me his personal cell number if I needed anything. When Mollie passed away he had a plaster heart made with Mollie’s paw print on it that said, 'Mollie, in your heart forever.' He donates his services to local rescue groups and animal shelters. His entire office is like a second family to me and my dog, Jessie. They are so caring. They even called to see how we were doing after Mollie’s passing. I was so lucky when Dr. May opened his clinic near my home. In my book, Dr. May is veterinarian of the century, not year!” - Lita G., Pearland, TX
“Dr. Michelle Myers of VCA Lewis Animal Hospital has provided medical care to my two dogs and five cats for almost six years. She is very caring, thorough, detail-oriented and obviously loves animals. She believes in quality of life for our four-legged companions, and therefore she doesn't hesitate to use and prescribe pain medications when needed. Not all veterinarians have this perspective; many see no need for this vital aspect of animal care. I know that when my pets are in Dr. Myers' hands, that they receive the best care that can be provided. Dr. Myers saved the life of my oldest cat, Casie, from a life-threatening illness about two years ago. Sadly, Casie, who was 16, passed away just a couple of months ago, but because of Dr. Myers, my family was able to enjoy the additional time we were privileged to have with her, and Casie experienced a good quality of life during that time. I highly recommend Dr. Myers as vet of the year.” – Sandra B., Silver Spring, MD
“Dr. Adam Ballard of Cheshire Crossing Animal Hospital is the family vet for my dog, and was for my three granddogs until my son moved to Iowa; even at that long distance he continued to have the best interest of my son's Lab in mind by making necessary referrals to Iowa University. The level of care, knowledge, compassion and sensitivity shown by Dr. Ballard is unprecedented in my experience in the medical field (I am a nurse). He takes time to talk to families, explaining all options, expenses, side effects, benefits and drawbacks of planned care. In a word, he is magnificent. I bless the day he came into the lives of our canines. They are healthier and happier, and as a bonus, so am I. There are no words to adequately express my respect and admiration for Dr. Adam Ballard. Kudos to a kind and extremely special man.” – Barb K., Delaware OH
“Dr. Kara at Animal Care Center has been an amazing vet to my dog, Savannah, for the past three years. My dog is very active, so we unfortunately have seen Kara many times. Most recently, Savannah had knee surgery and Kara was amazing at helping me and Savannah through it. Leading up to the surgery, she kept me well-informed of what to expect and helped me prepare. The day of the surgery, she was texting me hourly with updates. Then after the surgery, she told me to call or text if I had any questions. That night around 11 p.m., Savannah was crying and uncomfortable. I sent a text to Kara asking what to do, and she responded immediately with advice. The next morning she took care of her at her office to try to give me relief, since Savannah had been crying all night. She then proceeded to text me frequently for the next week asking how Savannah was. I was touched by how much she cared for my dog and was available to help me out. She's the best vet I could ever ask for my baby!” – Michelle K., Woods Cross, UT
“Dr. Natara Loose, of Massapequa Pet Vet, is unlike any vet I have ever met. She has been so kind, sensitive and understanding to me - not only my dog Pringle. Natara will come to help a pet in trouble (owned or stray) in any circumstances. When Hurricane Sandy hit NY, she spent all week in the pouring rain, barely sleeping because she was so determined to respond to every client and animal she possibly could, by foot, because there was no gas for her car. Her dedication, both to animals and their people, knows no bounds.” - Annabel E., Brooklyn, NY
“Dr. Steve Batch has taken care of our animals (dogs, cats, and a pet rat) for over 20 years, with the best clinical expertise, compassion and caring. He's an absolutely amazing veterinarian, who is not only THE BEST VET we've ever known clinically, but a veterinarian who communicates with both us and our animals in the kindest ways possible. We travel over 30 miles to Mesa Veterinary Hospital to see him, even though there are many, many vets in Boulder, where we live.
“He also cares for my father's dog, Charlie, a very sick geriatric Miniature Schnauzer. My dad is 99 years old, and Dr. Batch has helped both him and Charlie with kindness and expertise, through very difficult times, both medically and emotionally. He not only makes time to see Charlie even when he is extremely busy, but also is wonderful about coordinating with emergency clinics and calling us to check up on how Charlie is doing. Dr. Batch is intelligent, thoughtful, caring and is someone we trust implicitly. Truthfully, our human medical system could learn from Dr. Batch's example, in so many ways. He recommended Petplan to us, for which we are also grateful. In my opinion, you could not find a better vet!” – Susan T., Boulder CO
“Michelle is a tireless leader of staff, facilitator for clients, champion and advocate of pets’ rights and care. 2012 was business as usual for her at Sunrise Animal Hospital: She managed a busy animal hospital successfully. She is the first to cover a shift for a receptionist, tech or kennel worker. If an employee needs a pay advance, she reached into her own pocket to help; if they need a place to stay for the night, her home is opened to them. If she becomes aware of an animal in need of a home, a home will be found. She has found homes for pets in need countless times this year, like every other year I've known her. If a patient at our hospital is in need of treatment that the owner cannot afford, Michelle invariably finds a way to get it done. Our community was just devastated by Sandy. She organized truckloads of donations for pets and people, as well as donated vet care, and foster homes for pets left homeless. She is well known and respected in her home & work communities. SUPERHUMAN!!” – Andrew R., Hewlett, NY
“Dr. Jim at The Country Vet has taken care of all three of our dogs since we moved here 15 years ago. He is a kind, compassionate, caring vet. He has expanded his knowledge base to include alternative practices such as homeopathy, acupuncture and Chinese medicine, which he blends with allopathic medicine. Our first dog, a Doberman, lived to be 16, and Dr. Jim employed homeopathy to help her with some of her issues. Our second dog, a Lab, had seizures, and Dr Jim used acupuncture and Chinese herbs, along with Western meds to manage his condition. Kona loved going to see Dr. Jim for his acupuncture treatments as would quietly lie on the bench – for our big hyper goofball, that was quite the accomplishment!
"Dr. Jim had tears in his eyes when he told us about the tumors in Kona’s lungs, which took him 10 days later at age 11 – a long life for a big seizure dog. Our newest dog, another Lab, hasn't spent much time with Dr. Jim, since she is young and healthy. But we will trust his treatment of her. We have had the same vet much longer than we have had any of our physicians!” – Beth R., Novato CA
