Pet Health tips for June

H2OOOO – A hydrated pet is a healthy one. So, as the days warm up make sure that your pet has plenty of fresh, cool, water. And with this travel water holder you can always have some handy.

“Geronimo!” – Some dogs not only can’t swim, they sink. To keep them safe while you’re busy flipping burgers try this Skamper Ramp. So, they’ll be able to get out even if you can’t jump in after them.

Just a bit off the top – One way to keep your dog cool is to give him a trim. You don’t have to go “poodle” if you don’t want to. But a shaved belly will help lower his body temperature when he lies down on a cool floor. Keep in mind that not all dogs should be shaved. Double-coated dogs such as Huskys, Norwegian Elkhounds, Keeshonds, Labrador Retrievers and German Shepherds shouldn’t be shaved all the way down because their coats can be damaged. A qualified professional can tell you if a trim is in order.

Fun Finds

Fleas hate water. At least this water anyway. Check out this designer pet water from PetRefresh. You can get plain spring water, flavored spring water to entice your pet to drink even more (good for finicky cats!) or the flea and tick water that’s specially formulated to help keep those pesky guys off.

Stand out collars. Your pet’s one-of-a-kind, so his accessories should be too. And these are a breath of fresh air in the “unique” department.

Cats need exercise too. And the great thing about these toys is that the odds are your stomach muscles will get a workout just watching them play.

Dogs are better than chimps. It’s now believed that dogs, not chimpanzees should be used to help "shed light on human uniqueness.” Based on the fact that “dogs exhibit all three primary types of social behavior that humans evolved when they split from chimpanzees 6 million years ago." CSI: Vet School
Perhaps. The University of Miami is now offering a veterinary forensics course and they’re not alone in their investigations. The ASPCA has just launched a "Mobile Animal Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) Unit" to help "build cases against and prosecute animal cruelty offenders" http://www.aspca.org/fight-animal-cruelty/animal-csi

San Nicolas Cats
A population of close to 200 cats has lived on San Nicolas Island since at least the 1950s. Because the cats prey on endangered native species, the decision was made to remove them. As part of the removal effort, healthy captured cats will be transported into the custody of The Humane Society of the United States (should adequate funds be available to house them in an appropriate facility).

So far, seven cats (five males and two females) have been removed from the island. They are getting to know their new family—humans and felines—at CARE Sanctuary in Little Rock, Calif., where they will live as well-cared-for pets in a secure enclosure. And as the pet health insurance partner of the HSUS, these cats will enjoy the protection and continued care provided by Petplan.

Baby - Valor Dog of the Year
Owner: The Cardon Family; Albuquerque, N.M.

One night, 82-year-old Elwood Cardon wanted to get away. So one night he decided to quietly slip out of his daughter’s house with his Great Dane, Baby. On the way to his mountain home, Elwood became disoriented. His tires slipped off the road, and the SUV plummeted 20 feet downhill and wedged upside down between two trees. As it grew colder Baby snuggled with Elwood, keeping him warm and alert. Several times she crawled out of the SUV to seek help. Ten hours later, Baby finally got the attention of one of the remote area’s few residents. The woman followed the dog to the wreckage and quickly called for help. Update: Elwood Cardon passed away on January 28, 2009 at his home in Jemez Springs, N.M. The HSUS and Petplan wish to extend our deepest sympathy to his family.
