Ward off worry with these spooktacular tips and helpful tricks sure to cast a healthy spell on your furry friends!

Fright Night - Black cats are lucky after all! Not only are they considered symbols of luck in Great Britain and Japan, but as everyone knows, black goes with anything (especially a loving home). Still, Halloween can be a scary time for cats of any color, with ghoulish guests, open doors and shiny wrappers scattered around. Keep your feline friend at peace by setting up a safe, quiet space where scaredy-cats can retreat.

Don’t Sugar Coat It - Keep the kids’ candy out of paws' reach: As little as 8 ounces of milk chocolate or 1 ounce of Baker’s chocolate can put a 50-lb. pet in perilous danger, and sugar-free candy containing xylitol is equally as hair raising – just ask the pet parents of Dixie, a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon who needed emergency treatment ($1,600+ of which was reimbursed by Petplan) after eating 40 pieces of sugar-free gum!

Out for a Bite - An estimated 4.7 million dog bites occur in the U.S. each year, nearly 50% of which involve children under 12 years old. Bites can spike on Halloween, when canine pals are exposed to strange children and scary costumes. Follow these tips to prevent an accident and consider keeping pets at home for trick-or-treating.

Serve up a snack that’s filled with autumnal flair thanks to this frightfully delightful recipe:

Pumpkin Dog Biscuits

You'll need:
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 cup white flour
1/2 cup + 1 tablespoon water
2 tablespoons dry milk
1/3 cup corn meal
1 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1/2 cup oats
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 cup canned pumpkin

To make this recipe:
Mix ingredients together to a thick consistency. Roll out dough about a quarter-inch thick on a cooking sheet. Cut into two-inch long strips and arrange them on a cookie sheet. Bake for one hour at 350 F. For extra crunch, turn off the oven and allow the biscuits to sit overnight (out of paws' reach).

Remember to keep treats to less than 10 percent of your pet's daily caloric intake to maintain a healthy diet.

Check with your veterinarian before trying a new recipe for your pet, to ensure your efforts – and your furry friends! – are appropriately rewarded. For more inspiring ideas, visit our homemade pet food recipes board on Pinterest.

Raising Howl on Puppy Mills - In early September, the USDA announced a new rule to establish greater federal oversight of puppy mills and online dog sales, closing a regulatory loophole and requiring commercial breeders who sell their puppies directly to the public to be licensed and inspected by the USDA. Visit The Humane Society of the United States' website to learn more about this landmark achievement for animal rights.
