Feast on these fall health tips to protect your pets during family events!

A Bone to Pick - Let’s talk turkey: Cooked bones are dangerous for pets. Animal bones can splinter, causing intestinal perforation or obstructions in your pet’s digestive system, and can lead to other serious injuries, such as broken teeth or oral lacerations. Play it safe and offer your pet a Veterinary Oral Health Council-accepted product instead.

Recipe for Disaster - According to Petplan claims data, incidents of unexpected food-related illnesses in American pets spike over the four-day Thanksgiving weekend. Since a feast of turkey, fat-laden gravy and all the trimmings can cause stomach upset and lead to pancreatitis, skip the leftovers and feed your best friend one of these pet-friendly recipes from Dr. Ernie Ward.

Trouble Brewing - Don’t let a traditional toast squash your holiday celebration. From rum-soaked fruitcake to spilled drinks, gatherings that include alcohol put pets at risk. Not only can ingestion of alcohol lead to respiratory failure in four-legged party pals, but spent hops from home brewing are toxic and can lead to a veterinary emergency if consumed.

Turkey Pie

You'll need:
3 1/2 cups cooked (unseasoned) chopped white meat turkey
1 cup chopped raw broccoli
1/2 cup chopped apple
1 1/2 cups cooked millet
1 Tbsp kelp powder

To make this recipe:
Combine broccoli and apples in blender or food processor and blend until minced. In bowl, combine vegetable mix with cooled turkey meat, millet and kelp powder. Mix thoroughly. Divide into portions appropriate for your pet’s caloric intake. Makes 6 1/2 cups (163.5 calories per cup). Remember to keep treats to less than 10 percent of your pet's daily caloric intake to maintain a healthy diet.
