In 2001, we were two Wharton students whose $5,000 vet bill inspired a vision: to create the world's leading pet health company.

Today, we're a company of over 200 passionate pet parents continuing our mission to create a better world for animals — and the humans who love them.

January 1976

Petplan was founded in the U.K. by Patsy Bloom and David Simpson

July 2001

Entrepreneurs Chris and Natasha Ashton arrive in the U.S. with their Birman cat, Bodey, to embark on the Wharton MBA.

October 2001

Bodey's $5,000 vet bill sparks the idea for introducing a new pet health insurance plan in the U.S.

May 2002Accepted into the Wharton Venture Initiative Program

Chris and Natasha Ashton are accepted into the Wharton Venture Initiative Program.

September 2003

Chris and Natasha Ashton incorporate Fetch, Inc.

November 2003

Fetch, Inc. is awarded the exclusive license for the Petplan brand in the U.S.

July 2006

30 years after being founded in the U.K., Petplan launches the first-ever customizable pet insurance plans in the U.S., with full coverage for all hereditary conditions and a unique Covered for Life™ promise.

April 2008

Petplan becomes a top-rated pet insurance provider on PetInsuranceReview.com, maintaining its 9/10 rating ever since.

October 2008

Vernon W. Hill II, founder and retired Chairman of Commerce Bancorp and founder of Metro Bank, joins the Petplan board as Chairman.

February 2010

Petplan pays what is believed to be the largest ever pet insurance claim: $20,000.

April 2010

Chris and Natasha Ashton are named in Philadelphia Business Journal's annual '40 Under 40' list.

August 2010

Petplan insures its oldest pets to date: a 23-year-old cat named Dallas (in Florida) and a 19-year-old dog named Timber (in California).

October 2010

Petplan's extended coverage is launched nationwide — new policies introduce full coverage for any pet, any age, anywhere in the U.S.

March 2011

Petplan launches in Canada.

June 2012

Petplan is awarded the 2013 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.

September 2012

Petplan moves into a 27,000 square foot space, complete with an indoor dog park, swirly slide and foster cat pad.

July 2013

Petplan is selected as the exclusive pet health insurance provider of AARP.

Petplan launches the Petplan app, where policyholders can easily file a claim and find a vet from anywhere.

August 2015

Hermes joins the Ashton family and winds up as the poster child for pet insurance — racking up $14,000 in vet bills in his first 14 months alone!

January 2016

Petplan continues to honor those in the veterinary field and celebrates its 5th annual Vet Awards gala.

June 2016

Petplan partners with XL Specialty Insurance Company (which carries a rating of A+ by S&P) to give policyholders the first-ever fully customizable policy.

May 2017

Petplan relaunches GoPetplan.com... (to be continued!)

Petplanthropy

Through Petplanthopy, our corporate philanthropic initiative, we share our time and our resources to build a better world for animals. As part of our overall initiative, we make quarterly financial contributions to our select partner shelters, rescues and humane societies across the country.

  • For every policy sold, Petplan matches donations made to the National Police Dog Foundation to promote education and awareness for the purchase, training and ongoing veterinary care for active and retired policy K-9s.
  • For every Petplan-protected family member that crosses the Rainbow Bridge, Petplan donates $15 to Morris Animal Foundation in their memory.
  • Each employee has the opportunity to spend a day volunteering with a cause that is near and dear to them, in exchange for one day of paid time off.
