During these uncertain times, we are fortunate to have our pets for comfort. It’s important to keep pets entertained during this quarantine and to have a plan in place in case you or a family member becomes sick.
1. Prepare a pet readiness kit.
Gathering a few pet essentials is a great way to be ready for the unexpected. A pet readiness kit will ensure that at a moment’s notice, you’ll have everything ready for someone to care for your pet. These essential items include:
- One month of food and medication
- Food and water bowls
- Vet contact info and medical records
- The location and phone number of the nearest emergency vet clinic
- Daily routine and habits
- Pet insurance information
- Treats and toys
- Travel crate
- Extra collar and leash
- Disposable gloves
- Clean cloth or towel
Cat parents: Don’t forget the cat litter!
2. Assign an emergency pet guardian.
Ask someone in your household, a friend or family member to be your pet’s guardian in the event that you become sick. Fill them in on any necessary information and where to locate your pet readiness kit. For guardians who are not used to having pets, share this handy pet poison guide. If you have pet insurance, make sure your provider has your assigned guardian noted in your file.
For Petplan parents: Our main priority is to ensure the pets we protect are happy and healthy. Add a pet guardian to your Petplan account online and they’ll have access to your pet’s coverage should they need to bring your pet to the vet.
3. Restrict physical contact with pets if you don’t feel well.
If you show signs or have been diagnosed with the coronavirus, you should discontinue any contact with everyone, including your pets. You may wondering, can my dog can catch COVID-19? While there have been no reports of this illness spreading to pets, limiting contact will help ensure that both you and your pets stay healthy.
TIP: Talk to your veterinarian about what to do in case of an emergency.
Now more than ever, we need to take extra care of our beloved pets, like enrolling them in the most comprehensive pet insurance. Interested in learning more about COVID-19 and pets? We’re always here to answer your questions.
