Norwich Terrier breed information

The Norwich Terrier is just about as English as you can get. In the 1880s at Cambridge University, having a small ratting terrier was all the rage. One of these terriers, named “Rags,” ended up moving to a stable near Norwich, where he excelled at ratting and became the sire of the entire breed. Some years later, one of his progeny came to this country to sow his wild oats as Rags once had. In 1914, a Norwich Terrier named “Willum” became the forefather to American Norwich Terriers.

Historically, Norwich Terriers were used to flush small game from dens. They are the smallest of the terrier breeds, but what they lack in size they make up for in tenacity.  Like all terriers, they are plucky and fearless, and it is rare for them to back down in a fight.

Norwich Terriers are highly adaptable and make great family pets. Due to their compact size, they can do as well in small apartments as they do on family farms, provided they are given an outlet for their energy daily. Their ratting history makes them curious hunters – care should be taken to exercise them on a leash or fenced area, lest they spy something that needs chasing.

Curiosity aside, Norwich Terriers are still prone to a number of hereditary and congenital conditions that can adversely affect their health – not to mention your budget. Some of the conditions and illnesses Norwich Terriers are prone to include eye problems such as cataracts and corneal dystrophy; knee issues such as medial patellar luxation; skin conditions such as atopy; and nerve conditions such as Scotty cramp.

Thankfully, Petplan pet insurance covers all hereditary and chronic conditions as standard. Which means if your Norwich Terrier inherits more than just a tenacious disposition, you’re covered.
