Dog insurance

Tail wags for life

What is dog health insurance?

We know you consider pets part of the family and want everyone safe and sound. If they get sick or injured, dog insurance helps pay the vet bill. Our tooth-to-tail protection means Petplan is there from when they're a small pup to their senior years and beyond.

According to Petplan claims data, every six seconds a pet parent is faced with a vet bill for more than $1,000.

Unexpected vet visit? Here’s how Petplan pet insurance works

01

Get treatment

Visit any licensed veterinarian in the US or Canada. For those times when your dog thinks your remote is for dinner.

02

File a claim

Submit a pet health insurance claim online or from your phone with the Petplan app. Because less paperwork is the best kind

03

Be reimbursed

Look out for a wallet refill in around 5 to 14 days.

Note: Petplan, like most other pet insurance providers, does not cover routine and preventive visits, pre-existing conditions, or elective procedures.

What do I need to know before getting dog insurance?

Why Petplan pet health insurance?

Care that's here to stay

Some providers deny your pet insurance coverage for specific conditions past a certain age. We have no age limits on hereditary or chronic conditions like hip dysplasia or cancer, for any breed at any time.

Puppies protected

Some providers limit enrollment for pets of a certain age, but Petplan offers pet insurance for puppies as early as 6 weeks of age, with no breed restrictions, ever.

What dog insurance does (and does not) cover.

Accidents + injuries + illnesses

Petplan provides coverage for the reimbursement of veterinary fees due to injury and illness — including coverage for hereditary and chronic conditions as standard.

Diagnostic treatments

Laboratory and diagnostic testing, including specialized chemistry and blood work, are covered if they are part of treating or diagnosing a coverable injury or illness.

Veterinary exam fees

The cost of any exam conducted by a licensed veterinarian to treat or diagnose an ill or injured pet, including emergency and specialty care.

Prescription medications

Medications prescribed by your veterinarian as a treatment for an illness or accident are covered, including nutraceuticals. Vitamins and heartworm/flea and tick preventives are not covered.

Imaging - MRI, CAT scan, ultrasound

Imaging deemed medically necessary by a licensed veterinarian to help diagnose or treat your pet, including MRI, CAT scan and ultrasound, are covered.

Cancer treatments

Petplan is proud to offer coverage for veterinary oncology care and cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Dental treatments (non-routine)

Petplan will cover non-routine dental treatments such as broken teeth or periodontal disease provided your pet has had its teeth checked by a vet in the 12 months prior to the effective date of coverage and any treatment recommended as a result of a veterinary check-up was carried out.

Surgery + rehabilitation

Any rehabilitation prescribed by a licensed veterinarian as part of a treatment protocol and performed at a veterinary facility.

Holistic therapies

Holistic therapies such as veterinary acupuncture, homeotherapy, chiropractic treatment and stem cell therapy are covered provided the treatment is recommended and administered by a licensed vet.

Referral + specialist treatment

All specialties including surgery, oncology, cardiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, dentistry and neurology are covered by Petplan.

Routine & wellness care

Unlike a wellness plan, which covers routine care such as teeth cleaning, neutering/spaying and vaccinations, cat insurance pays you back for the unexpected and costly care needed for injuries and illnesses.

Preventive care

Any treatment, service or procedure, including but not limited to physical examinations, medications, surgeries, inoculations or laboratory procedures for the purpose of prevention of illness or injury or for the promotion of general health, where there has been no injury or illness.

Pre-existing conditions

Like all pet insurance providers, Petplan cannot cover a medical condition which first occurred or showed clinical sign(s) or symptoms before the effective date of your policy or during the policy waiting period.

Cosmetic procedures

Elective or specialty procedures, including but not limited to tail docking, dewclaw removal, eyelash removal, ear cropping, spaying or neutering elective gastroplexy and more, unless requested by a veterinarian to treat a covered injury or illness.

Liability coverage

Any costs associated with an injury to a person or property damage caused by a pet.
