For some of us, exercising is a chore, but this is not the case for our pets! Best friends relish the chance to exercise both their bodies AND their minds. A great way to accomplish both at once is to teach your pets new tricks (yes, old dogs can learn new tricks!).
When you teach your pets new tricks, it improves their intelligence and strengthens the parent-pet bond. Besides having fun and spending time together, you are providing an outlet for energy that might otherwise be used negatively.
Like us, pets are subject to the “use it or lose it” rule and this applies to the both the body and the mind. New tricks can be simple (like “shake” for dogs) or more advanced (such as a mini obstacle course or hide and seek with a favorite cat toy).
You may want your tricks to serve a purpose (like retrieving the newspaper) or maybe you’d like to impress your house guests with your furry companion’s parlor tricks. Some tricks to try include roll over, jump through a hoop and speak (or meow) on command. Whatever the goal, it is probably achievable with perseverance (and lots of treats!).
Of course, after all that, you’ll also need to teach your pooch how to “take a bow!”
