It was love at first sight when Leonard met Ella during a business trip to Tennessee. Having recently lost one of their Sheepdogs to illness, his family had room in their heart for another rescue, and Ella, a 5-year-old Old English Sheepdog
, was the perfect fit. She had been found wandering by Country K-9 Rescue, weighing only half of her current 190 lbs. But the Balks saw a best friend who just needed a chance to start from scratch, not a past she had left behind.
“When you give a rescue a second chance, you never know what gems you’ll discover,” beams Lisa, Leonard’s wife. To protect that love, they enrolled Ella with Petplan
. When she became lame in July 2012, they were able to pursue the treatment she needed and only had to pay a fraction of the nearly $2,500 vet bill.
Almost two years later, Ella’s a happy, healthy girl who is a full-fledged four-legged member of the Balk family. As Lisa admits, “The love you get from a rescued pet is like no other. You can feel the appreciation and gratitude.”
