Hip dysplasia is an inherited condition and literally means an abnormality in the development of the hip joint. It is characterized by a shallow acetabulum (the "cup" of the hip joint) and changes in the shape of the femoral head (the "ball" of the hip joint). Hip dysplasia can exist with or without clinical signs. When dogs exhibit clinical signs of this problem they usually are lame on one or both rear limbs. Severe arthritis can develop as a result of the malformation of the hip joint and this results in pain as the disease progresses.

What is Routine Care?
Routine (preventive) care refers to check ups and procedures that are designed to prevent future illnesses from occurring rather than treating existing illnesses. These include annual physical examinations, vaccinations (distemper, rabies, leukemia), heart worm prevention medication, dental check ups.

Why doesn't Petplan cover Routine Care?
Routine care is as much a part of keeping your pet healthy as taking your dog for a walk. Annual check-ups or vaccinations can easily be planned and budgeted for, whereas an unexpected accident or illness can leave you reeling with prohibitively expensive veterinary bills.
This is why Petplan doesn't cover routine care. Insurance for scheduled treatment inflates premiums and represents poor value for money - often at the expense of coverage for the unexpected where it matters most. To find out more about Petplan's unprecedented levels of cover for the unexpected
