With her heart set on adopting a Pit Bull, Mally was thrilled to offer Sydney her home. From hiking the endless mountains in Colorado to running around the backyard, the pup relished time outside with his new family. He also proved to be the perfect playmate for their Husky/Border Collie, Bowie. Not wanting to leave anything to chance, Mally didn’t wait to protect the family’s new addition.

“I heard about Petplan from a friend that used to work there. As a retired vet tech who worked in an emergency vet hospital, I always knew I would cover my pets with insurance,” Mally stated.

It’s a good thing, too. Just a few months after adopting Sydney, the puppy bit more than he could chew, resulting in an unexpected (and costly) trip to the vet.

“He was pawing at his face and doing weird things with his mouth. I thought he was chewing on something so I looked inside and saw the top third of his tooth was missing.”

Although no one witnessed Sydney chipping his lower canine tooth, Mally has a good idea what happened. The family’s backyard doesn’t have any trees, but that didn’t seem to stop the determined pooch from the neighbor’s overhanging branches. Sydney would frequently jump up, grab a branch with his teeth, snap it as he fell down and —voilà!—the perfect fetch stick.

At first the chipped tooth didn’t seem to bother the acrobatic dog, but Mally took Sydney to their trusted veterinarian just to be sure. It turned out that Sydney needed to see a dental specialist and have a root canal to prevent health issues.

For a few days after the procedure, Sydney ate water-soaked kibble and followed orders to take the prescription medication and antibiotics regularly. Before long, Sydney was back to his adventurous ways!

“A lot of pet parents hope that they don’t have these expenses, but you want to be prepared. It’s smart to set aside money, but it also helps to have insurance to afford the care.”

Without a pet insurance policy, Mally’s family would have been out the entire $1,374 treatment cost. But with Petplan, they received a $462 reimbursement check, taking the financial sting out of getting Sydney the care he deserved.
