Treeing Walker Coonhound breed information

To learn about the heritage of the Treeing Walker Coonhound, you need look no farther than her name! Originally bred to track and chase wild raccoons and opossums into trees, she is descended from the Walker Foxhound, which evolved from the English Foxhounds Thomas Walker had imported to Virginia in 1742.

A medium-sized hound weighing between 45 and 65 lbs., she is active, intelligent and agile, making her a perfect hunter for small game. When not instinctively patrolling the yard for critters, she is mellow and affectionate with family members, and her even-temperedness makes her a good companion for children and other pets. Her short, glossy coat — with white, black and tan tri- or bi-coloring — is easy to care for.

Making sure she gets lots of exercise and teaching her plenty of tricks will help to keep both her body and her mind in good shape. Because she’s so smart, careful and consistent training will help to keep her from getting into trouble (due to her active nature, she can tend towards being accident-prone!).

While considered to be a healthy breed overall, Treeing Walker Coonhounds are still prone to some hereditary and congenital conditions that can adversely affect their health — and your family budget. Some of the conditions and illnesses Treeing Walkers are prone to include joint conditions such as hip dysplasia, and ear infections.

Thankfully, Petplan pet insurance covers all hereditary and chronic conditions as standard. Which means if your Treeing Walker Coonhound inherits anything more than a hunger to hunt, you’re covered.
