starting from scratch
It was love at first sight when Leonard met Ella during a business trip to Tennessee. Having recently lost one of their Sheepdogs to illness, his family had room in their heart for another rescue, and Ella, a 5-year-old Old English Sheepdog, was the perfect fit. She had been found wandering by Country K-9 Rescue, weighing only half of her current 190 lbs. But the Balks saw a best friend who just needed a chance to start from scratch, not a past she had left behind.
“When you give a rescue a second chance, you never know what gems you’ll discover,” beams Lisa, Leonard’s wife. To protect that love, they enrolled Ella with Petplan. When she became lame in July 2012, they were able to pursue the treatment she needed and only had to pay a fraction of the nearly $2,500 vet bill.
Almost two years later, Ella’s a happy, healthy girl who is a full-fledged four-legged member of the Balk family. As Lisa admits, “The love you get from a rescued pet is like no other. You can feel the appreciation and gratitude.”
